Problem Statement

In a modified GV design sprint, we were tasked with designing and testing a possible solution to help remote workers find public places where they can work remotely.

Goal

Create a mobile solution that allows PostUp users to find public places to work. The solution should allow users to share advice and feedback about places they have visited.

Responsibilities

As lead designer, I participated in all phases of the design sprint process from user research and mapping through to validation .

Day 3

Decide

My storyboard begins with the user searching for wifi on Google, then being prompted to download the PostUp app. Once logged in, the user enables location settings. The user adds the date and filters to narrow down the results. The user finds a suitable location and makes a reservation.

DAY 4

Prototype

I used the Marvel application to create the PostUp prototype. Marvel is easy to use, produces the desired results, and provides a clean appearance when attached to a case study.

The prototype was designed to allow intuitive navigation through the screens. Users should get a feel for the basic function of the application through this exercise. The test is intended to highlight key elements that may be missing from the functionality or list of amenities.

The prototype can be accessed through the following link:

DAY 5

Validate

The participants tested provided valuable information for the next iteration of the PostUp application.

Amenities in the filter of the first iteration did not add value to the user experience. It is a foregone conclusion that public spaces that allow patrons to stay for any period of time will have bathrooms available. The same can be said for temperature regulation. Most spaces will have certain comforts, it is only worth noting if the space does not have them available. Amenities in the filter should include features that set the spaces apart from each other.

Participants expressed the importance of allowing pictures to be posted by the user in the review section. User feedback can tell a lot about a space, but pictures are worth a thousand words. Oftentimes business owners have a lot of input in how their company appears online. The pictures posted on business profiles show the company on their best day. The images are not updated periodically if at all. User photos provide a day-to-day look at the space as it is experienced, and tell a better story of what can be expected.

Looking Ahead

The percentage of people working remotely increased from 4.7% in January 2019 to 61% in May 2020. Today, 16% of companies are fully remote and 83% of the global workforce believe a hybrid business model is ideal.

Remote workspaces are becoming increasingly popular for a workforce seeking an alternative to working from home. Amenities offered in rental workspaces now include catering, and onsite fitness centers. There is money to be made in this booming new industry. The companies that will have the most success will offer the best mobile application user experience with both visual appeal and an easy to use mobile application.
